Problem: Avast update fails and the Avast tray icon has red X on it. If you see this condition, your antivirus is not working, you should immediately call The Computer Guy for service. Do not delay because now you do not have active antivirus protection. Further use in this condition could allow virus infection. If your Avast tray icon does not have the red X on it then your computer does not have this problem, all is fine.

Probable causes are:

A virus definition update got stuck and avast needs repair.

A virus infected your computer and disabled Avast.

Hard drive errors have caused Avast to fail, the hard drive could be failing, immediate attention is required to prevent possible further data loss.

The solution could range from simple to complicated.

One incident that is known to have occurred:
A virus definition update on 01/25/2012 got stuck causing avast to need repair. This did not effect all computers, but I have seen a few of these incidents. If your Avast tray icon does not have the red X on it then your computer does not have this problem, all is fine.

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.7 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris, and Adobe Flash Player 10.3.186.6 and earlier versions for Android. These vulnerabilities could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.

There are reports that one of these vulnerabilities (CVE-2011-2444) is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious link delivered in an email message. This universal cross-site scripting issue could be used to take actions on a user’s behalf on any website or webmail provider if the user visits a malicious website.

Adobe recommends users of Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.7 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris update to Adobe Flash Player 10.3.183.10. Users of Adobe Flash Player for Android 10.3.186.6 and earlier versions should update to Adobe Flash Player for Android 10.3.186.7.

Users running browsers other than Chrome should download the patched version of Flash Player from Adobe’s site.

More info at PC World

If you ignore this update, your computer is left vulnerable to hackers that silently try to attack your computer to take control of it or steal money from you.

Free Antivirus requires annual registration. Even the free version must be registered because Avast wants to be able to determine how many active users they have. This allows them to maintain enough update servers for all the users they have. There are two scenarios where Avast Free needs to be registered:1) You have just installed Avast Free.2) After 1 year you receive a message from Avast Free to re-register.On-line registration is very simple and its the preferred method for all users of avast Free Antivirus 6.x installed on a computer with standard Internet connectivity. To perform on-line registration follow these steps:Right-click the avast! system tray icon and select Registration information from the menu,or double-click the avast! Free Antivirus desktop icon to open the avast! user interface, then in the left pane click the MAINTENANCE tab and from the unfolded submenu select Registration. The YOUR REGISTRATION screen will appear, where you should click Register now to open the registration form.In the meantime, a dialog box offering an upgrade to avast! Internet Security may popup. To continue using avast! Free Antivirus and open the registration form, just click the Register button under displayed product comparison table.Once the registration form appears, enter all the required data (marked with an asterisk *) into the text fields, and when its finished, click Register for free license to submit your registration. After your registration is complete, an information dialog box will be displayed. Just click OK.Then your registration status will change to REGISTERED and the expiration date will be updated on the YOUR REGISTRATION screen.avast! Free Antivirus 6.x can now continue to be used for 12 months and you will continue to receive automatic updates to both the program and your virus definitions. At the end of that time, it will be necessary simply to register for a new free license.
